Roundtable

Talk Description
This roundtable convenes art researchers examining the layered histories of art in Indonesia—spanning from colonial legacies, modern art pedagogy, artistic practices, curatorial developments, art management, and cultural diplomacy. Despite the different timeline and focus, participants find common ground in a shared commitment to understanding the landscape of art through working with archives. Instead of following a chronological or linear discussion, we aim to cultivate dialogue that reveals threads across eras and practices, exploring how different research approaches strengthen our work as art researchers today, and how the past informs our realities.Key areas of discussion include the curatorial agency in the Indonesian New Art Movement (Axel Ridzki), colonial impacts on arts education (Kiki Rizky Soetisna Putri), representations of Indonesian artifacts in Dutch museum (Qanissa Aghara), artwork verification in artist-owned spaces (Jorghi Saputra), artists’ drawings circulation in post-independence publications (Akmalia Rizqita), interpretations of arbitrary portrayals in political art (Patriot Mukmin), and cultural diplomacy and regional alliances as underlying motives for contemporary art practices  (Dian Arumningtyas).
