Talk Description
China is not only the largest contributor of international students globally but has also become an increasingly popular study destination over the past decade due to its advancements in various fields. This article examines the motivations and experiences of Indonesian Muslim students studying at Chinese universities, based on in-depth interviews with 20 current students and alumni. The findings reveal diverse motivations for studying in China, with scholarships being the primary incentive, followed by China's rapid economic development and alignment between studies and career opportunities. Overall, their experiences as Muslims in these academic environments are largely positive, characterized by competitiveness, discipline, and openness.Notably, this study contrasts with previous research, as Indonesian Muslim students in China do not face religious discrimination, unlike some international Muslim students in other non-Muslim countries.
