Talk Description
The phenomenon of female political candidates in Indonesiafaces multifaceted challenges, one of which pertains to self-representation in campaign media. This study explores thepractice of self-sexualization and objectification in campaignbillboards of female candidates, where the content oftenemphasizes physical appeal and text that reinforces genderstereotypes rather than promoting their political visions andmissions. Such practices not only affect the personal image ofthe candidates but also perpetuate patriarchal norms that hinderthe progress of women in the political sphere. Utilizing amultimodal discourse analysis method, this research criticallyexamines the visual and textual elements of problematicbillboards to uncover patterns of representation that aredetrimental. The findings of this study aim to provide insightinto the negative impacts of self-objectification in politicalcampaign media and stimulate further discussion on politicalcommunication strategies that empower women in Indonesia. Keywords: Self-sexualization, Self-objectification, PoliticalCampaign Media, Representation
